---- — Having lived a full and satisfying life, John William Alfrey, 92, passed from this earth on Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2013. John was loving, considerate and stoic to his last breath.
Born Aug. 9, 1921, in Lebanon, John is the son of Nellie Hartsfield and Frederic Alfrey.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Gladys Adams Alfrey, and is survived by his wife of three years, Bertie Rodgers Alfrey.
His children are Sue Guess and Linda Hambrose/Berg; Jane Ingram, Cheryl (Katy) Waldeck and Samuel Alfrey.
He was grandfather to Robby and Michael (Waldeck), Matt and Libby (Ingram), Sammy and John Reed (Alfrey), Steve, Kelly, and Cindy (Guess), Kim and Colleen (Hambrose), and Danielle and Benjamin (Berg).
He served his beloved America in the U.S. Army during World War II, earning the bronze star for service in the Battle of Luzon. He served as Deacon of Ninth Street Christian Church, Logansport, for many years.
A mechanical contractor, he was the proud proprietor of J-Way, Inc. in Logansport for over 30 years, ending his career at A./C. Equipment Representatives, Inc. in Indianapolis before retiring to Tulsa in 2006.
He was an avid golfer, competing on championship courses across America throughout his life and enjoying the game well into his 80s. He was a member of The Logansport Country Club, Tippecanoe Country Club of Monticello and The Brownsburg Country Club.
John was a dutiful son and brother, loving husband, fine friend, and cherished father throughout his long life. He was a wonderful conversationalist and attentive listener. His generous spirit and zest for living brought joy and laughter to family and friends, who now rest assured he has left this world a better place because of his life well lived.
A memorial service is planned for 2 p.m. today at Saint John’s Episcopal Church, 4200 S. Atlanta Place in Tulsa, with a burial in Indianapolis.
