Richard ‘Dick’ Bowles

Wyoming, Mich. — Richard “Dick” Bowles, 88, Wyoming, Mich., passed away March 16, 2013.

Dick was preceded in death by his wife, Helen, and his grandson, Jacob.

He is survived by his daughters, Carole Ann Johnson, and Betsy (Jeff) Boggs; his son, Tim (Kathy) Freewind; seven grandchildren, Todd (Kim) Johnson, Andrew Johnson, Tyler (Sarah), Evan and Alexus Boggs, Kaitlin and Kara Freewind; and six great-grandchildren, Brendan, Erin, Colin, Patrick, Moira and Emma Johnson.

Dick was born in Detroit, but was raised in Logansport. Dick served in World War II on the USS Lexington as a pharmacist’s mate. He was awarded several medals for his service but it was his stories of his time in the service that will remain with us all. Dick loved telling stories whether it was about growing up in his beloved hometown, Logansport, his time at Indiana University or the many years he worked for the Pennsylvania then Conrail Railroads. Dick also owned the B&K Root Beer stand in Wyoming for three years in the 1960s.

Dick was a consummate storyteller. He liked nothing better than making his children and grandchildren laugh, and regardless of the situation, he could find something funny about it and tell a story about it. Dick was the ultimate optimist, right to the end; he always thought things were going to turn out all right. Dick loved kids and thought each of his grandchildren were the best thing that ever happened to him. Dick and Helen loved to travel and visited almost every state and much of Canada. He documented his life with the many slides he took on his travels and of his kids and grandkids. Dick loved to read, especially history and politics. He was great at telling stories about little known facts about various founding fathers and political figures, particularly humorous ones. He also loved music, anything but rock, which he perceived to be the destroyer of the “real” music from the swing era. He always loved Dixieland bands and he and Helen visited New Orleans on numerous occasions.

Dick will be remembered in a celebration of his life Thursday at Ada Congregational Church, 6330 Ada Drive SE, Ada, MI 49301. Visitation with the family will be from noon to 1 p.m., with the memorial service starting at 1 p.m.

Burial will take place at Mount Hope Cemetery, Logansport. Family and friends will gather at 1 p.m. Saturday at Mount Hope Cemetery Chapel and will proceed to the graveside, accompanied by the Dixieland band, The Swampwater Stompers.
