Lawrence E. ‘Larry’ Smith


LOGANSPORT — Lawrence E. “Larry” Smith, Jr., 85, Logansport, passed away at 5:03 p.m. Tuesday, April 30, 2013, at Logansport Memorial Hospital.

Born Oct. 20, 1927, in Cass County, he was the son of the late Lawrence E. and Elsie (Wilson) Smith. On July 1, 1961, he married Virginia J. Foust; she survives.

Larry was a WWII U.S. Army veteran. He was proud to serve in General MacArthur’s headquarters in Tokyo, Japan.  

He retired from RCA in Monticello after 20 years. Larry was a former member of Royal Center Masonic Lodge, Royal Center Order of Eastern Star and Grace United Methodist Church.

He attended Baptist Christian Church in Royal Center and he enjoyed fishing, reading, woodworking and most of all eating Chips Ahoy cookies with his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Virginia J. Smith, Logansport; children, Edward E. Smith, Pa., Daniel L. Smith (Kathy), Burnettsville and Kenneth J. Smith (Gail), Pekin, Ind., Mary June McIntire, Royal Center, Rebecca Jean Johnson (Kenneth), Fairborn, Ohio, Norma Jo Howard, Royal Center, and Lorie Berkshire (Tim), Royal Center; and sister, Betty Long, Logansport. He is also survived by 19 grandchildren, 28 grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by brother, James David Smith, sister, Letha Marie White, and great-great-grandson, Aaden Snay.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Harrison-Metzger & Rans Funeral Home, Royal Center, with Pastor Richard Utterback officiating. Burial with military rites will be at Royal Center Cemetery.

Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home and also one hour before the time of service on Saturday.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Baptist Christian Church Building Fund.
