SOUTH BEND — Donald “Peeps” Eugene Raymer, 82, South Bend, passed quietly on Tuesday, June 17, 2014, after suffering a fall and complications. He was a beloved father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
Don was born Aug. 12, 1931, in Logansport, to George and Thelma Raymer. His entire life he was very close to his older sister, Doris, who both lovingly teased and protected him in their youth. Don’s first job was working for the family dairy business driving the delivery truck. He truly enjoyed driving trucks and this was just the beginning.
During his youth, he loved to fish, hunt and swim. He was a natural at any sport he attempted. In later years he was known as a billiard champion though never competing professionally. Although somewhat of a quiet and shy man, he had many friends throughout his life and travels.
He graduated from Logansport High School and enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He attended dental assistant school and was assigned to driving a portable dental semi unit that traveled across the United States stopping at military bases. The dental unit served all military personnel who needed dental work. He often shared fond memories of his military years with his children and grandchildren. For the last year of his military carrier he was assigned to chauffeur the admiral of the Great Lakes Naval Base.
Prior to his military service he met Rebecca “Becky” Sue Conn, who he courted while serving. After his honorable discharge from the Navy, Don and Becky were married. They had three children: David, Susan and Daniel.
Don attended Barber College after his military service and he and Becky lived in Logansport for four years. His first job was as a barber in a local Logansport barbershop. He was restless standing in a barbershop each day and his desire to drive a truck and travel on the road urged him into taking a job with H.H. Smith Company, a barber supply company out of Indianapolis.
