Lonnie Clay Powell, 95, Logansport passed away at 5:24 p.m. Sunday, June 22, 2014, at his residence surrounded by his family.
Born on Sept. 4, 1918, in Clay City, Ky., he was the son of the late William and Lena (Brandenburg) Powell. On Feb. 14, 1938, he married Nellie P. Bruce. She preceded him in death on Feb. 24, 2013, after 75 years of marriage.
He attended Burrows Elementary School and Rockfield High School.
Lonnie was also a U.S. Army veteran serving in World War II.
He was an Engineer for the Pennsylvania/Conrail Railroad where he retired in 1980 and he also had formerly delivered milk for Ray’s Creamery.
He was a member of Wheatland Avenue United Methodist Church and a former member of Rockfield Christian Church. Lonnie was also a former member of the American Legion. He enjoyed traveling, camping, gardening, bowling and watching basketball games.
Survivors include his children, James Powell (Cherrie) of Sellersburg, Joyce Likens, Rita Bonnell, Dennis Powell, Thomas Powell (Lisa) and Anthony Powell all of Logansport and brother, Leroy Powell of Logansport. He is also survived by many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by four sisters, two brothers, two sons in law, Phil Likens and Jerry Bonnell, daughter in law, Mary Powell and granddaughter, Roseann Powell.
Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Marocco-Rans Funeral Chapel. Burial with Military Rites will be conducted at Ever Rest Memorial Park.
Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m., Tuesday at the funeral home.
