Etta Jane Grusenmeyer

CINCINNATI — Etta Jane Grusenmeyer, 89, Cincinnati, passed away on Saturday, Oct. 19, 2013, in Cincinnati.

She was born Oct. 25, 1923, in Grand Junction, Colo., the daughter of Charles H. and Ethel (Crim) Wilkinson.

She was a graduate of Logansport High School Class of 1941. She attended Gulf Park College in Gulfport, Miss., and DePauw University in Greencastle.

On May 28, 1944, she married Tom Applebee at Broadway Methodist Church in Logansport. As the wife of Rev. Applebee, they served the Congregational and United Church of Christ churches in Connecticut, Condon, Ore., Cleveland, Ohio, Manchester, Iowa, and Davenport, Iowa. They were active in the civil rights movement in the 1950s, ‘60s and ‘70s. In the 1960s, she owned and operated a yarn shop in Davenport. Tom passed away in 2002.

In 1971, Etta Jane returned to Logansport, where she was a member of the Tourists Study Club and the Cass County Historical Society.

On Oct. 14, 1972, she married Albert G. Grusenmeyer, owner of a local grocery. They traveled extensively in the U.S. and Canada by motor home during 1988-1998 and were members of two travel clubs. Al Grusenmeyer passed away in 2006.

She was an active member of the Logansport Art Association and the owner and teacher of an art studio, the Katie Glen.

In 2005, Etta Jane moved to WoodBridge Health Campus in Logansport, then to St. Margaret Hall in Cincinnati in 2008.

Etta Jane is survived by seven of her children, Margaret Kelley of St. Augustine, Fla., Steven Applebee of Jacksonville, Fla., Jean Stewart (John) of Mendon, Utah, Daniel Applebee (Carolee) of Logansport, James (Tracey) Applebee of Cincinnati, Jon (Michiko) Applebee of Cincinnati and Amanda Snider of Logansport; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a sister and brother Margaret and Daniel Wilkinson in childhood; her adult brothers Frank, Charles and William Wilkinson; her son David C. Applebee; and her infant great-grandson David E. Applebee.

A celebration of her life will be 5 p.m. Friday at Kroeger Funeral Home, Logansport, and friends and relatives may visit from 3 to 5 p.m.

The interment of her ashes will be at Mount Hope Cemetery at a later date.
