Louise Cole 'Beezie' Schmitt

Louise Cole ‘Beezie’ Schmitt

NORWALK, Conn. — Louise Cole ‘Beezie’ Schmitt, 89, Norwalk, Conn., formerly of Peru and Logansport, passed away Sunday, June 16, 2013, at the Norwalk, Connecticut Hospital after a short illness.

She moved to Connecticut almost 10 years ago to live at The Greens at Cannondale Assisted Living Community.

Born in Peru Sept. 1, 1923, to Josephine A. Cole and Jules Omar Cole, she was a graduate of Peru High School and then Christian College in Columbia, Mo.

In April of 1944, Beezie married Herman R. Schmitt of Logansport. The Golden Rule Department Store was their family business and a landmark of local commerce for three generations. Herman preceded her in death June 23, 1982.

As a longtime resident of Logansport, Beezie was very active in many local organizations and passionate about helping those in the community who had special needs. She was a member of Tri-Kappa Sorority, Altrusa Club, the Logansport Art Association and the Cass County Historical Society.

She enjoyed reading and seeing the world, especially traveling with her grandchildren to exotic destinations. The Cass County Literacy Society was close to Beezie’s heart, spending many hours in enjoyable volunteer work.

She is survived by three daughters, Gretchen (Mrs. Charles) Yengst of Wilton, Conn., Susie (Mrs. Al) Lancaster of Venice, Fla. and Heidi (Mrs. Brian) Schmitt-Weaver of Wolcott, N.Y.

Also surviving are seven grandsons, one granddaughter and four great-grandsons.

She was also preceded in death by a brother, James O. Cole, and two sisters, Mary Jo Brown and Kate Buffington, all of Peru.

The funeral mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday at All Saints Catholic Church with Father Michael McKinney and Father Timothy Kroeger officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Hope Cemetery.

Visitation will be at from 4 to 7 p.m. with a 6:30 Scripture Service Thursday at Kroeger Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the Cass County Literacy Volunteers, Emmaus Mission Center Food Pantry and/or Cass County Humane Society.

Condolences may be left online at www.kroegerfuneralhome.com.
