James Bernard “Bernie” Lowes, 100, Logansport, passed away at 7:55 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 6, 2013, at Chase Center. He was born Nov. 12, 1912, in Logansport, to the late Herbert H. and Ursula Alma Cozatt Lowes. On July 18, 1937, in Logansport, he married Kathryn J. Harvey, who preceded him in death Dec. 19, 2011.
Bernard retired in 1982 after 36 years as a sales representative of industrial supplies for Baker Specialty and Supply Company.
Bernie was a member of River of Life Christian Church, VFW Post 3790, Tipton Masonic Lodge 33 and Elks Lodge 66. He was a former deacon, elder, elder emeritus and chairman of the board of the former Ninth Street Christian Church. Bernie was a former leader of Boy Scout Troop 205, and received the Silver Beaver Award and Statuette Award. He was a former Rotary Club member, and had also served on the board of directors. He was a member of the United Commercial Travelers and was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving in the South Pacific.
Survivors include one son, James B. Lowes Jr., Decatur, Ala.; one grandson, Scott (Krista) Lowes, Clarkston, Mich.; one granddaughter, Gretchen Roan, Decatur, Ala.; five great-grandchildren; one brother, Herbert Lowes; and one sister, Louise Miller.
A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at River of Life Christian Church, with Rev. Keith Kincaid officiating. A visitation will be held at the church from 9:30 a.m. until time of services. Burial with full military rites will follow in Mt. Hope Cemetery.
