---- — Robert S. Nickel, 87, Logansport, passed away at 4:10 p.m. Saturday, March 15, 2014, in Miller’s Merry Manor. Born Jan. 13, 1927, in Gary, he was the son of Louis and Louisa Yelen Nickel. On Oct. 24, 1953, in Chicago, he was married to Patricia R. Hall, who survives.
Bob was a retired rural mail carrier for the US Postal Service. He was a veteran of the US Navy, serving during World War II, and was a member of the American Legion in Crown Point.
A 1943 graduate of Horace Mann High School in Gary, Bob earned a bachelor’s degree in 1951 from Indiana University. He was a member of All Saints Catholic Church.
Bob was an avid model railroader. He had been active in the Soap Box Derby and was race director in 1982. He loved his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Surviving are four sons, Robert A. “Drew” (Carolyn) Nickel, Logansport, Steven E. (Donna) Nickel, Livonia, Mich., Michael Thomas (Kathi) Nickel, Evansville, and Donald William (Vicki) Nickel, Logansport; two daughters, Patricia A. (Edward) Green, Livonia, Mich., and Catherine L. (Bryan) Catlin, Clayton; 11 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.
A Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at All Saints Catholic Church. Father Dominic Petan will officiate.
Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Kroeger Funeral Home. Full military honors will be accorded at the funeral home at 4 p.m. There will be a Scripture Service at 7 p.m. Thursday.
