---- — WALTON — Gertrude P. Birnell, 94, Walton, went home to be with the Lord at 8:55 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2013, at Memorial Hospital, Logansport.

She was born Oct. 5, 1919, in Winamac, to Glenn and Susie Thompson. She first married Leroy Tharp and he preceded her in death; she then married John H. Birnell and he also preceded her in death in 1983.

She was a homemaker and loved her family. She enjoyed crochet, fishing, playing piano, guitar, traveling and was an avid gardener.

She is survived by her daughters, Cheryl L. Jones, Walton, and Nancy Keith, Deer Creek; sons, Royce K. Tharp, Kewanna, Ernest Birnell, Logansport, and Mark Allen Birnell, Walton. She is also survived by several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; first and second husbands; three sons, Edgar G. Tharp, Roger Tharp and John Michael Birnell; four brothers and two sisters.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Murray Weaver Funeral Home, Galveston, with Pastor John Newman officiating. Burial will follow at Winamac Cemetery in Winamac.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
