PERU — Judith Ann Comerford, 68, Peru, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2014, at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne, surrounded by her family.
Judith (Judy) was born June 23, 1945, in Peru, the daughter of George and Dorothy (McDowell) Hanks. She married Joseph “Joe” Comerford Oct. 20, 1963. They celebrated 50 years of marriage in October 2013.
Judy graduated from Peru High School in 1963. Throughout her life, Judy worked at the Bunker Hill Elevator, the Miami County Agriculture Stabilization and Conservation Office, and Maple Acres. She and Joe spent several years driving a semi-truck for Henderson Trucking and Cherin Transportation. They traveled to 47 of the 48 continental United States.
Judy’s greatest role was as a farm wife and mother. She was a member of Miami County Farm Bureau and Miami County Young Farmers. She was once honored with the Farm Wife of the Year Award. Judy enjoyed antique tractors and was a charter member of Pioneer Power of North Central Indiana and the Indiana A-C Partners. She loved flowers and created many beautiful gardens that she tended tirelessly. Judy was also a member of the Miami County Historical Society and was the treasurer of the Salem Cemetery Association.
In addition to her husband, Joe, Judy is survived by two daughters, Jodie and Tom Schmitt of Kokomo and Jennifer Comerford of Peru; granddaughter, Taylor Schmitt of Kokomo; a sister, Mary Jo Sholty of Pennsylvania; a nephew, Robert Sholty of Pennsylvania; a niece, Suzanne and Russell Toms of Pennsylvania; a stepmother-in-law, Mary Lou Comerford of Peru; and stepsister-in-law, Cheryl Landrum of Peru.
Judy was preceded in death by her parents.
Memorial services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Allen Funeral Home, 136 S. Elm St., Bunker Hill, with the Rev. J. Robert Clark officiating. Burial will be in Salem Cemetery, Peru.
Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
