Mommy Makeover leading to improvements

Moms feeling good during week four of fitness challenge.

Four weeks into the Mommy Makeover challenge, the three moms are going strong.

“The weight is going down, so I think they are doing well,” said Heidi Hendricks-Knight, aquatic fitness director at the Cass County Family YMCA. “They have all been in here working out and I think, so far, they are on track for what they are suppose to be doing.”

Hendricks-Knight hopes the three women continue their dedication to working out and pushing themselves over the next several weeks.

To start the 13-week program, the women were instructed to focus on building cardiovascular strength.

“It’s a great way to begin losing weight,” Hendricks-Knight said. “Cardio workouts get your heart rate up for one. It builds the heart up and burns calories, where as just lifting tears down muscles.”

Once the moms started to lose weight, they could start lifting weights and adding different exercises besides cardio.

Each mom’s workout was based on her time allotment and what she preferred to do. Laura Mize has been running on the treadmill.

Hendricks-Knight also gave her a workout routine to follow. Stacy Cox usually begins her workouts with weight lifting followed by a walk and some jogging on the treadmill. Christina Artrip wanted to do something more structured, so she’s been participating in some of the classes offered at the Y.

Hendricks-Knight said the amount of time for each person to build up the cardio strength is different. Mize for example, has been able to build strength from nothing.

“When the body goes from nothing to doing something, the body is going to change,” Hendricks-Knight pointed out.


Mize said the cardio workouts have become easier for her over the last several weeks.

“It’s definitely getting easier as the weeks go on,” she said. “I’m feeling more energy. Not as much as I want, but I’ve had a rough week. It is a huge improvement from where I was.”

Before she started Mommy Makeover, Mize said she always had trouble walking on a treadmill, mainly due to sore shins.

“I didn’t think I could walk 15 minutes on the treadmill and now I’m walking 45 minutes to an hour and even running.”

Mize has pushed herself and is up to 20 minutes of running on the treadmill at a time.

While she hasn’t set a goal of how much time she would like to be able to run, she said her overall goal is to just become healthier.

“It doesn’t matter how long I can run, as long as I burn calories,” she said. “Some days I push myself a little harder. Running any amount of time is a huge improvement.”


Artrip has built up her endurance and said her body is becoming stronger.

While she has also been able to run for longer periods of time, she has had to recently back off because it was causing knee problems.

During the aerobics class, she has been able to go all out, instead of holding back.

“That part is getting a little better,” she said. “I think I paid for it this last time I went though. I tried to do more and I’m still sore.”

Overall the cardio has become better. She was able to jog around Riverside Park twice last week, which surprised her.

“I pushed myself a little harder on the last lap because it was a little harder,” she said. “ I just kept pushing myself harder each time to go a little longer. I think building up the strength has helped a little bit too. I’m getting stronger, so I’m able to carry weight better.”

Artrip admitted to cheating on her program a little over the holiday weekend, which was also her husband’s birthday. She still lost one pound during the week, so that left her encouraged.


Over the last four weeks, Cox has increased the amount of time she is able to run.

She’s been alternating between running and walking on the treadmill at the Y. When she started, she could only run for a minute straight. She can now run for at least three and a half minutes.

“I’ve never really been a runner,” she said.

When the Mommy Makeover challenge is completed, Cox would like to be able to jog at least one full mile.

Building up cardiovascular strength has been a critical aspect for her workout.

“It’s important for stamina,” she said.

According to Cox, the workouts have become easier as the weeks go by, especially the aerobics class she has been participating in.

The three moms recently met for a group water aerobics class.

“It’s a high-intensity, aerobic workout in the water,” Hendricks-Knight explained. “It is easier on the body and that is why most people choose that. It’s something new and different.”

According to Hendricks-Knight, it’s important to change your routine every so often. Once someone repeats the same workout over and over, the body will get used to it.

“It is important to change up your routine after a few weeks, it puts your body in shock again,” she explained.

Over the upcoming weeks, Hendricks-Knight would like to change things up with the moms.

“The goal is to stick with it and lose weight by increasing the workouts,” she said.
