Kiser places 16th in 400 at state

Pioneer freshman Madison Kiser placed 16th in the 400-meter dash at the state finals with a time of 59.02 seconds Friday at Indiana University in Bloomington.

“I didn’t do as well as I planned,” she said.

Kiser entered seeded ninth and ran in Lane 9 in the last timed final of the quarter-mile race.

“Being in the ninth lane messed me up mentally. I ran a bad time for me,” she said. “But it was a great experience to be able to compete with the best in Indiana. The atmosphere gave me a new look on things.”

Kiser will continue to work hard this summer entering her sophomore year of high school.

“I’ll be going back to IU on the 26th to run the 800 at an event,” she said. “I’ll keep training for that. I’ll work harder and get better. I’m a little disappointed but it was a great experience.”

Pioneer coach David Gregorich said Kiser gained valuable experience at the state finals.

“She went in with the right mindset. She had never been in the outside lane. She was always in Lane 1 or Lane 4 because she was undefeated this year and always got the best lane. It was her first time ever competing in Lane 9 and you can’t see who you are running against until the final turn,” he said. “She’ll learn. Being a freshman she hadn’t had that experience. But her goal was making it to state. We’re surely expecting her to go back the next three years. She’ll go in as a veteran now.”
