Champion scores 30 in Le Moyne’s victory
Logansport product Nate Champion turned in an outstanding performance to lead Le Moyne College to 75-66 victory over Monmouth University in a men’s basketball exhibition game Sunday at West Long Branch, N.J.
Champion scored a career-high 30 points to lead the NCAA Division II Dolphins past the D-I Hawks. The 6-foot-3 senior guard also stuffed the stat sheet with a team-high nine rebounds, four assists and three steals. He played a full 40 minutes.
Champion made 10 of 19 shots from the field including 1 of 6 from 3-land. He knocked down 9 of 10 attempts at the charity stripe.
Le Moyne is picked to finish fourth in the seven-team Southwest Division of the Northeast-10 Conference, as voted on by the conference’s 15 coaches and announced by the conference office on Monday.
The 2013-14 Northeast-10 basketball season will be the first of divisional play. The league tournament will still consist of a 10-team, single-elimination format, with the top five teams from each division qualifying.
New Haven, which advanced to the semifinals of the NCAA East Regional last year, was the top pick in the Southwest Division. Saint Anselm College, which won the Northeast-10 Conference regular-season championship last year, was the top pick in the Northeast Division.
Le Moyne, which went 13-14 last year (10-12 in Northeast-10), opens the regular season on Tuesday, Nov. 12 at Seton Hill.
