Winamac XC teams shine at regional

Several area runners advance to cross country semistate.

Winamac’s girls and boys cross country teams each recorded a fifth-place finish at the Culver Academies Regional Saturday to advance to the semistate as a team.

The New Prairie Semistate will be held next Saturday beginning at 11:30 a.m. EST.

Boys event

Winamac placed fifth with 139 points. Logansport placed seventh out of 10 teams with 185.

Warsaw won with 20 points followed by a top four of Western (78), Kokomo (96) and Rochester (114). Warsaw senior Ellis Coon was the regional champion with a time of 16:17.

Winamac’s top five finishers were all freshmen or sophomores. Sophomore Zen Zupin led the way with a 10th place finish in 16:58, followed by sophomore Kyle Collins (11th, 17:00), sophomore Derek Dotlich (39th, 18:00), freshman Braden Tankersley (52nd, 18:20) and freshman Joe Vontobel (60th, 18:28).

This year the top 10 finishers on non-advancing teams advance to the semistate.

Caston junior Seth Cousins advanced with a 13th place finish in 17:07. Logansport sophomore Jacob Graf advanced an 18th place finish in 17:18. Carroll senior Cameron Conn placed 29th in 17:47 to advance.

Also competing for Logansport were Alex Calisto (34th, 17:51), Kyle Jordan (55th, 18:23), Orlando Toloza (58th, 18:26) and Kenny Echols (64th, 18:44).

Pioneer’s Dylan Bice placed 37th in 17:54 and Jacob Van Horn was 72nd in 19:14.

Cass’ Cail Brown placed 57th in 18:25.

Carroll’s Patrick Lewis was 38th in 17:59.

Caston’s Dalton Daily placed 68th in 19:07 and Darin Chew was 76th in 19:22.

Girls event

Winamac placed fifth with 127 points.

Warsaw won with 57 points, followed by a top four of Eastern (74), Rochester (94) and Western (111).

Freshman Claire Collins paced Winamac with a 10th place finish in 20:01, followed by sophomore Jayden Scott (25th, 21:06), sophomore Kial Beach (32nd, 21:21) and freshman Lilly Linch (45th, 21:52).

Caston freshman Adrianna Dague advanced with an eighth place finish in 19:57. Cass senior Gabi Carney advanced with a 22nd place finish in 20:54.

Cass junior Haley Johnson placed 33rd in 21:16.
