Prep roundup, Oct. 15

Winamac’s volleyball squad topped Carroll 25-21, 21-25, 25-21, 25-21 Monday, spoiling the Cougars’ senior night.

Warriors coach Cathy DeFries was impressed with her team’s play.

“We played very well against a very much improved Carroll team,” DeFries said. “They had two middle hitters that could really bury the ball and did a great job. Once we got our blocks together and figured out we were able to shut them down.”

Ashley Eichelberger led Winamac with 10 kills, seven digs, six aces and four blocks. Taylor Jones had 14 assists, six aces and three kills. Savanna Button had 12 kills and five blocks. Bethany Brogdon contributed seven digs and three assists. Lexi Hanson had nine assists. Dakota Heims and Raychel Davis each had three blocks.

Bailey Worl, Carroll’s lone senior, had a big night with 21 kills and 21 service points.

Also for Carroll, Elizabeth Eurit had 30 assists, six points, three aces and three kills. Libby Eller had 18 digs, six points and four aces. Lauren Worl had 12 digs, seven points and six kills and Madison Miller had 10 digs.

Pioneer 3, Clinton Central 1

Class A No. 6-ranked Pioneer (21-8) had to go four games before taking the match against Class 2A No. 13 Clinton Central, 25-15, 10-25, 25-23, 25-22.

Pioneer coach Rod Nies was happy with the win, but confused with the shift in momentum early in the match.

“[I am] not quite sure how you beat a team 25-15, and turn around and get beat 25-10,” Nies said. “The team is up and down like this. We have to find a way to channel our focus and stay into the game and the whole match. We are getting to the end of the season. If we are lucky to get out of sectional, then we play a tough regional. It seems to get tougher and tougher for us. We have to find a way to get through this phase.
