---- — Carroll’s boys soccer squad opened defense of its 2012 sectional championship by defeating Lafayette Central Catholic 4-0 Monday in the opening round of the IHSAA Class A Benton Central Sectional.
The Cougars (9-7-1) scored all four of their goals in the second half. Justin Willoughby led the way with two goals with Alex Hickner and Thomas Piotrowski scored a goal each. Elliot Packard and Garrett Francis each had an assist and Seth Eldridge had two saves.
Carroll plays Faith Christian in the semifinals at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
Caston lost its sectional opener to Rochester 3-0 in Class A.
Zach DuBois led Rochester with two goals.
Delphi defeated Faith Christian 1-0 in the Class A West Lafayette Sectional for its first-ever sectional win.
Danielle Swayzee scored the Oracles’ goal, which came in the second half. She was assisted by Christiana McCarty. Goalie Jersey Lattimore had six saves.
Delphi plays Northwestern at 5 p.m. Thursday.
Logansport 3. Delphi 1
Logansport defeated Delphi 25-15, 21-25, 25-11, 25-12 to improve to 14-10 on the season.
Katie Easter led Logansport with 18 assists, 10 service points and three aces. Nakeya Penny added eight kills and two blocks. Hannah Jones had 16 assists, 14 points and two aces. Syd Bullard led in kills with 13, and Paulie Frye led in blocks with three. Lindsey Cheney was tops in digs with 17, followed by Kailey Vernon with seven.
Winamac 3, Rensselaer 0
Winamac easily defeated Rensselaer 25-19, 25-12, 25-17.
Taylor Jones led Winamac with 14 assists, four digs and three aces. Savanna Button added six kills, five digs and three aces. Bethany Brogdon had 14 digs and four kills. Ashley Eichelberger had 12 kills and four aces. Jaclyn Jacobs contributed three aces and two blocks. Lexi Hanson had 10 assists, and Marlynn Martindale had three blocks, next was Dakota Heims with two blocks.
Carroll 3, Western 0
Caroll swept Western, winning 25-21, 25-23, 25-17.
Elizabeth Eurit led Carroll with 25 assists, 12 digs and three aces. Bailey Worl served 18 points and also had 15 kills and 13 digs. Lauren Worl added 10 points and eight kills. Libby Eller contributed 19 digs, Rebekah Conn had 11 digs, and Bailey Filburn had three aces.
Wabash 3, Cass 0
Cass was swept by Wabash, 25-21, 25-11, 25-16.
“The score is a bit deceiving,” Cass coach Gretchen Crum said. “We played with a lot of energy. [We] served well in set one, made too many errors in set two, and by then their No. 7 was on a roll. She’s one of the best hitters we’ve seen this year. She hit up, over and through our block and had a very fast arm. We tried to keep the ball from their big hitter as hard as Wabash tried to get the ball to her.”
Gabi Hartley led Cass with 12 assists and two kills. Claire Crum had seven digs and four kills. Tori Powell had six kills and six digs. Kassi Zeck had 20 digs. Bailey Gremelspacher had five assists. Trish Hartley and Brooke Langley each had four kills.
