Top-ranked NC sweeps Logan in volleyball

Carroll wins boys soccer sectional title

— Logansport’s volleyball team swept past Richmond Saturday in the Berry Bowl but was on the receiving end of a sweep by Class 4A No. 1 New Castle.

The Berries swept the Red Devils 25-10, 25-16, 25-21 before a 25-10, 25-16, 25-9 loss to the Trojans. Logan is now 19-6 and 4-2 in the North Central Conference.

“I thought we played well the first match against Richmond,” Logan coach Jon Vernon said. “New Castle showed why they’re No. 1. They’re a solid team. The [Lauryn] Gillis girl is very good, she’s going to USC. But the rest of them are so good. They kept us off balance. In the second game we were in the game. They overmatched us the first game. In the second game we were within 16-14 and they made a run.

“I thought the kids played hard. They’re just dominant. We tried, we did everything we could. They’re very strong and have no weaknesses.”

Syd Bullard has seven kills against New Castle, and Nakeya Penny added four. Katie Easter collected eight digs, Lindsey Cheney had six and Alaina Page added five.

Bullard had 14 kills and Kiley Victor added 11 against Richmond. Easter posted 12 digs and Bailey Kelley had 13 assists and nine digs. Page added 16 assists and seven digs.

W. Central 2, Carroll 0

West Central defeated Carroll in straight sets 25-18, 25-21.

The Cougars were led by Bailey Worl with nine kills. Bayleigh Filburn added eight assists, and Cassidy Carmen came up with eight digs with Alivia Seward following with five digs.

Boys soccer Carroll 2, Faith Christian 1, 2 OTs

Carroll’s (13-6) Justin Willoughby scored the winning goal on a penalty kick in the second overtime period of the Class A Benton Central Sectional championship match.

The Cougars were down 1-0 after halftime, but fired back with Willoughby scoring his first goal also on a penalty kick in the second half to tie it at 1-1. Goalkeeper Seth Eldridge had four saves.

Carroll plays Argos on Thursday at 5 p.m. in the Caston Regional.

Football

W. Central 16, North Judson 8

The Class A No. 8 Trojans bolted out to a 16-0 lead and held on at North Judson.

Chantz Marlatt had 102 yards rushing and a 40-yard touchdown run for West Central (8-0). Michael Hamilton had 94 yards rushing and a 58-yard TD run. He was 2 of 3 passing for 54 yards.

Caston Sanchez scored on a one-yard run for North Judson in the second quarter. He attempted just three passes in the game and completed one for seven yards. Maverick Pitts led the Bluejays (2-6) with 70 yards rushing on 19 carries.
