Editor’s note: Members of the Logansport girls basketball team are visiting China this week for a historic trip. The Lady Berries are the first team from Indiana to make an in-season trip overseas, as Monday was the first official practice day for IHSAA girls basketball teams. The following is a journal that senior Whitney Jennings is writing for the Pharos-Tribune.
Tuesday, Day 3
Today we visited one of the seven wonders of the world. The Great Wall was absolutely amazing!
We were told that it usually takes people an hour to make it up the wall. We decided to make it a competition and time ourselves. I think our time ended up being just over 40 minutes, but it was a strenuous 40 minutes. We often found ourselves out of breath. Maybe this means Coach Hoover should run us a little more at practice on Monday. Unfortunately though, Coach Hoover and his wife couldn’t make the climb, they decided to sit this one out at a nearby coffee shop.
We also had a chance to do a little shopping today, and the Chinese people love to bargain with you. If you ask “how much,” they will name a price, but many times we were able to pay a lower price than they originally offered. A lot of the girls bought some really neat things to bring back home.
For lunch we ate at the Golden Palace, which was close to the Great Wall. We all agreed that this has been our favorite restaurant so far. A short while later, we went on to the Peking Duck for an early dinner because we had to leave for the Beijing Airport to catch our flight to Hangzhou. At the airport we had to say goodbye to Tom, one of our tour guides. All of us had grown really fond of him. He was really funny and even taught us how to say “I love you” in Chinese. Sadly, he was not accompanying us to Hangzhou.
It was another exhausting, but extremely fun day. I’m definitely going to feel the Great Wall climb in my legs tomorrow though. Our flight to Hangzhou went well, but we just got back to our hotel at 12:30 and have to be up at 7:00 for another full day. I’m excited to find out what we will be doing!
