Lewis Cass wrestlers finish 2nd at conference meet

Logansport places second at NCCs.

Lewis Cass’ wrestling team boasted a pair of individual champions and finished as team runner-up in Wednesday’s Mid-Indiana Conference meet at Peru.

The host Tigers won the team title with 244 points, followed by Cass at 202. Western (171.5), Maconaquah (166.5), Hamilton Heights (160), Eastern (158.5), Taylor (61) and Northwestern (42.5) rounded out the field.

Cass placed in 13 of 14 weight classes, but Peru placed in all 14 to help win its third straight conference crown.

“We had some kids who performed well,” Cass coach Nate Burrous said. “Drake Hall, a freshman, won conference, which is outstanding. Gabe Welch won his second conference championship, so I was really happy with them. I’m really proud that all 13 of our wrestlers placed [Wednesday]. That’s a big accomplishment. I think the difference between winning and second place was we didn’t wrestle up to our seeds in every weight class. That’s what hurt us.”

Hall (24-5) pinned Eastern’s Isaac Hanny to win the title at 113. Welch (30-2) outlasted Taylor’s Kaleil Rucker in a 7-6 decision to claim the crown at 160 after claiming top honors at 145 last season.

Zach Layer (26-9) was runner-up at 132, as was Brock Reich (21-7) at 285.

Jarrett Carden(28-5) took third at 120, as did John Hartley (20-10) at 182.

NCC Meet

Logansport finished in second place with a score of 200 points. Kokomo captured the North Central Conference title with a score of 224, and Anderson was third with 168.

Individual NCC champs for Logansport were Justin Porter (113), Josh Brandt (126) and Ryan Schrock (138). The Berries also had three runner-ups in Kevin Gonzalez (152), Sandis Carter (160) and James Aho (170).
