Watterson brothers shoot 77 at regional

WINONA LAKE — Lewis Cass’ talented Watterson brothers, David and Zach, each shot a 6-over par 77 at the Warsaw boys golf regional at Stonehenge Golf Club on Thursday.

Many years a 77 is good enough to qualify for the state finals, but not this year at Stonehenge as the state cut was a 1-over par 72.

“It wasn’t good enough. The competition was pretty good,” said David Watterson, an IPFW recruit.

“I got to 3-over after 16 and finished bogey, double. I thought I had a good chance if I parred out but just didn’t get it done. ... It turned out I needed birdie, birdie.”

It was the first year the Kings competed at the Warsaw Regional and the Peru Sectional. Previously they competed at the Lafayette Jeff Regional and Logansport Sectional.

“Our regional was obviously tougher,” David Watterson said. “You’ve still got to shoot the scores.

“The course was good. It wasn’t easy but it wasn’t terribly difficult. It was nice. I like it. ... It’s maybe a little easier than Battle Ground, but you’ve still got to get the ball in the hole.”

David, a senior, added he was proud of his younger brother Zach, a sophomore.

“Zachey hung in there. He was 6-over through 11 and finished 6-over,” he said. “He’s improved a lot in the last couple years.”

At the sectional at Rock Hollow earlier in the week, Zach made a winding 15-foot putt and David missed a 10-footer to give little brother the sectional medalist honors.

“If he keeps beating me I’ll have to beat him up,” David said with a laugh.

As for what’s next for the duo, David said, “Zach and I are playing in the Masters Junior Tour and Golf Week Junior Tour throughout the summer.”

David is receiving a partial athletic scholarship to golf at IPFW.

“I can’t wait,” he said. “Billy King is a great coach. I’m excited to start the season and see what I can do to help the team.”
