Panthers survive scare at Carroll

by Beau Wicker

FLORA — The Pioneer Panthers were certainly in a bind at halftime in their sectional semifinal game at Carroll Friday night.

The solution: Give the ball to Joey Miller and give it to him often.

Miller exploded for 187 yards rushing and five touchdowns on 21 carries in the second half to lift the Panthers to a 35-21 win over the Cougars. Class A No. 4-ranked Pioneer (10-1) will travel to No. 1-ranked Lafayette Central Catholic next week for the sectional championship game.

Carroll (6-5), which had a five-game winning streak snapped, led 14-0 at halftime after an outstanding first half of play. But the Panthers regrouped at halftime and were much sharper in the second half.
