Logan 15s fall to Travelers in district tournament

Logan showed good fight after losing its opening game of tourney.

Logansport’s 15-year-old all-stars wrapped up their Babe Ruth district tournament on Sunday at Steinman Field.

After dropping their opening game of the tourney to Lewis Cass 2-0, the locals’ defense stiffened and coming through the losers bracket they eliminated Rochester 4-1 and then won a rematch against Lewis Cass 2-1 to eliminate the Kings. Sunday, Logansport faced a strong Travelers team and gave the defending state champs all they could handle. Logansport jumped to a 2-0 lead before eventually falling 5-4 in eight innings.

Logan got on the scoreboard first with two runs crossing the plate in the top of the third inning. Braxton Reinholt and Bobby Ashbrough both reached with hits to lead off the inning. Reinholt scored on a hit by Chad Clifford and Ashbrough came in on a hit by John Ward for the early lead.

Travelers then started showing that they indeed came to play when they pushed across three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Travelers added one more run in the bottom of the sixth, making it a 4-2 game and setting up some seventh-inning heroics by the locals. Austen Muller collected a one-out hit and crossed the plate when Jake Conrad hit safely to make it 4-3. Conrad scored the tying run on Justin Schrock’s RBI hit.

Logansport threatened in the top of the eighth but left Ashbrough stranded at third base.

Mason Brenda of Travelers drew a walk to lead off the bottom half of the eighth and became the winning run when he scored with no outs in the inning.

“Overall, I thought the kids played really well this weekend. We had a few errors in our opening game against Lewis Cass but we made a couple changes and the defense really jelled,” said Logansport manager Zac Lesher. “One thing we have to correct, though, is our offense. We have to be a little more aggressive at the plate. We watched way too many pitches that were strikes and you just can’t get behind like that. We’ll work on that before we play again and hopefully the bats will be there for us.”

  • NEWCOM: State parks offer fun times at reasonable prices Summer is in full swing and many people are taking trips as part of their summer vacations. You can venture near to home or far away, but the trip is only as good as you and your family make it. The amusement parks and beaches in Florida are nice, but many of us cannot swing those trips these days. The good news is that there are many good state parks in Indiana to enjoy and they are affordable.
