— Logansport’s girls swimming team got off to strong start out of the blocks Thursday at the LHS pool.

“All the girls swam as fast as they swam at the end of last season,” Logan coach Heidi Hendricks-Knight said. “That’s really good.”

The Berries defeated Eastern 160-109 and Pioneer 167-111 as the three-way meet was scored as separate dual meets.

Rebecca Yeoman, Jen Crafford and Ashley Fawcett were each quadruple winners on the night for Logan.

Yeoman claimed wins in the 100- and 500-yard freestyle events, Crafford won both the 200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke and Fawcett won the 200 free and 100 backstroke. All three swam legs of the winning 200 medley and 400 free relay teams.

Brooke Bullard won diving with a score of 164.10. Emily Clark was part of both winning relay teams.

“This meet was a great start for our girls. They were really excited to get the first meet in and they did an awesome job,” Hendricks-Knight said. “Jen Crafford and Brittany Morrow had PRs in the 100 breast and 100 free. Katie Easter had her PR in the 50 free.”

Yeoman and Crafford return for their sophomore seasons after claiming North Central Conference titles as freshmen.

“We’ve got some girls with the potential to make it to state in relays and in individual events,” Hendricks-Knight said.

The Berries’ 200 medley relay team swam a personal-best time of 1:59.24, missing the school record by just three seconds on the first night of the year, according to Hendricks-Knight.

“Our 200 medley relay, wow, only three seconds off the high school record time. That’s their best time ever, holy cow. I thought, ‘where did that come from?’” she said.

The Berries have 30 girls out for the team, which their coach thinks is a good number.

“I was a little nervous about our depth, but after [Thursday] night I think we’ll be OK,” Hendricks-Knight said.

Pioneer did not win an event on the night but had several close calls. The Panthers defeated Eastern 138-131.

For Pioneer, Kaity Cover placed second in the 200 IM and third in the 100 butterfly. Sarah Lassiter was third in the 200 free. Emma Groff was third in the 100 free. Gabby Harvey was third in the 500 free, and Maddie Boucher was third in diving. The 400 freestyle relay team of Cover, Groff, Harvey and Kayla Miller finished second.

Pioneer swims at Northwestern Tuesday night, while Logan hosts Cass on Monday.
