Alex Calisto decided he was going to go for it.
After finishing in fifth place in the 800-meter run at last year’s state finals, the Logansport senior was again running in the first of two timed finals Saturday at the IHSAA Boys Track State Meet at Indiana University in Bloomington.
“I made a pretty risky move early,” Calisto said. “I led the second lap and had a reasonable lead. I figured going out fast would be the only way I could make the podium.
“I couldn’t hold the pace the last 80 meters. I ended up being fourth in the slow race.”
Calisto finished 13th overall with a time of 1:56.26.
Shelbyville senior Daniel Kuhn was the state champion in the half-mile with a time of 1:50.91. Lawrence North senior Joe Murphy won the first race and placed fifth overall with a time of 1:54.61.
“I think he would have beat me no matter what,” Calisto said of Murphy. “Even though I didn’t podium, I’m glad I ran how I did. Had to make up 10 spots and I could only get six.”
Lewis Cass senior Cody Campbell placed 19th in the discus at state with a throw of 144 feet, 3 inches.
“It was a really fun experience. I didn’t throw all that well but it was cool to be with all the elite competition,” Campbell said.
Throwers got just three attempts for a chance to advance to the finals.
“I had an off day,” Campbell said.
Lake Central senior Gelen Robinson, a Purdue football recruit, won the state title with a throw of 197-07.
Pioneer freshman Madison Kiser placed 16th in the 400 dash at the girls state meet Friday with a time of 59.02 seconds.
“I didn’t do as well as I planned,” she said.
Kiser entered seeded ninth and ran in Lane 9 in the last timed final of the quarter-mile race.
