Alex Calisto is making a return trip to the state track meet, while Cody Campbell and Maddie Kiser will be making their first appearances.
The girls state finals take place starting at 3 p.m. today, while the boys state finals start at the same time on Saturday. Both events will take place at the Robert C. Haugh Track & Field Complex at Indiana University in Bloomington.
The following are state finals preview capsules of the three local athletes.
Alex Calisto, Logansport
Calisto returns to the scene where he finished fifth in the 800-meter run at state a year ago with a time of 1:55.06. He shattered his personal-best time by 2.99 seconds.
He was able to achieve that result despite running in the first of two timed finals since he entered seeded 15th. The top 14 seeds ran in the second final.
He’s just happy to be back as there was a close call at last week’s South Bend St. Joseph Regional.
“I was the underdog at the regional. I was a seventh seed and had to fight back for the top three,” he said. “I got boxed in on the last turn. I didn’t have a way out. In the last stretch I passed a few guys.”
Calisto placed third at the regional in 1:56.72 to grab the final spot in the state finals. He finished exactly one second behind regional champion Blake Kramer of Elkhart Memorial and had 0.63 of a second to spare to reach state.
“The regional was all right. I ran my fastest time of the year. I feel I can go faster,” Calisto said. “It worked out. I’m happy with it.”
Calisto enters with a faster time than he did a year ago but with a lower seed, as he’s seeded 19th and will again run in the first of two timed finals.
