Prep roundup for Tuesday, May 6

Winamac softball squad enjoying HR spree

Katie Bingaman pitched a five-hit shutout as the Class A No. 11-ranked Pioneer softball team defeated Maconaquah 2-0 Monday.

Bingaman struck out 10 and walked just one.

“We got outstanding pitching and great defense,” Pioneer coach John Bingaman said.

Ashley Miller and Kennedy Nies drove in the Panthers’ runs. Miller had an RBI double and Nies had an RBI single.

Megan Smith and Kayte Miller each added a double.

“Offensively, we struggled,” John Bingaman said. “We scored 25 runs over the weekend and we only scored two [Monday]. We hit a lot of pop-ups, which the defense can get under. We need to hit the ball with more authority. Maconaquah is getting better, but they still have a long way to go.”

Caston 3, Frontier 2

Class A No. 9-ranked Caston defeated Class A No. 10-ranked Frontier 3-2 in Midwest Conference action. It’s the Comets’ first victory over the Falcons in softball.

The Falcons led 2-1 going into the sixth inning, when the Comets scored the tying run. Caston then went ahead in the top of the seventh inning to lead 3-2, which turned out to be the final score.

Marli Leazenby led Caston with a triple. Cat Diveley, Madison Taylor, Tierney Rentschler and Katie Henry each added a single.

Tori Rentschler was the winning pitcher. She allowed two runs on three hits with eight strikeouts.

Logansport 11, Lafayette Jeff 1, 5 innings

The Berries took care of the Bronchos with two runs in the first, six runs in the second, two runs in the fourth and one run in the fifth. Jeff’s only run came in the second inning.

Emily Prentice led Logansport with two doubles, two singles and four RBI. Mallory Rowe had a home run and three RBI. Kennedy Curl added two singles and one RBI. Bailey Kelley had a double and two RBI.

You can venture near to home or far away, but the trip is only as good as you and your family make it.
