Bowling club is striking it big

A group of Logansport High School students have found a club that is right up their alley.

These kids have been throwing strikes and spares at an impressive rate.

The Logansport High School bowling club is in its eighth year of existence. Contrary to its name, the club has no affiliation with Logansport High School other than the members are LHS students.

The club opened its season against Warsaw last week at the Rochester Bowling Center.

The boys team defeated Warsaw 7-4.

Dereck Beckler led the way for Logan with games of 242-255 for a 497 set, while up-and-coming junior Tyler Reinholt bowled an amazing 288 high game followed by a 160 to post a 448 set. Pitching also was Andrew Foutz with games of 181-210. Other members of the team include Sandis Carter, Braxton Reinholt and Austin Baker.

“The boys sent a message of contention to the conference with this win,” second-year Logan coach Al Franklin said.

The girls team was led by Shyann Boyer (172-193) and Megan Vaughn (157-174) in an 8-3 loss to Warsaw. Other members of the team include Shaylee Boyer, Courtney Collis, Cami Hall, Katelin Kersey and Jalinn Bryant.

Beckler is a defending state finalist and Shyann Boyer was a semistate finalist a year ago.

The boys team qualified for regionals as a team for the first time in its history a year ago.

“This year with both the boys and the girls we want to make it at least to the regional, if not the semistate,” Franklin said. “We have a strong team team-wise and on an individual basis. We expect three, possibly four boys to go all the way to state. We have two girls who are pretty strong as well. Expectations are pretty high this year.”

The Logan club is a member of the Wabacanoe Conference. Other conference members are Rochester, Peru, Tippecanoe Valley and Whitko.

Logan has 12 matches scheduled for this year in addition to the postseason.

The club is sponsored by Myers Sport Bowl in Logansport.

“Don Myers at the bowling alley sponsors us. He doesn’t charge us anything and we practice there two times a week,” Franklin said.

The club is looking to raise money.

“Each year we do a fundraiser and accept donations for our club,” Franklin said. “The purpose of the donations is to supply the kids with uniforms, bowling equipment, league fees and travel.

“We are doing a ticket raffle for our fundraiser this year and also taking monetary donations. If you make a donation to us, make your check out to Logansport High School Bowling Club. All the money we receive goes to the kids to help them be the best bowlers they can be.”

Franklin said checks can be dropped off at the bowling alley.

He added scholarship money can be earned by bowlers at some of the events and at the end of the season. He said a bowler can earn $400 in scholarship money for a top finish.

He said the club also has four JV bowlers and that he plans to start a middle school program next March to try to develop younger bowlers to get into high school bowling.

“As a whole high school bowling in Indiana is huge,” Franklin said. “High school bowling has over 1,000 teams in the state of Indiana alone.”

  • NEWCOM: State parks offer fun times at reasonable prices Summer is in full swing and many people are taking trips as part of their summer vacations. You can venture near to home or far away, but the trip is only as good as you and your family make it. The good news is that there are many good state parks in Indiana to enjoy and they are affordable.
