Logan 9s finish as runners-up in district tourney

Squad advances to northern state tourney

After dropping their first game of the double-elimination tournament to Kokomo UCT, the Logansport 9-year-old all-stars battled their way through the losers' bracket to face Russiaville for the Cal Ripken district tournament title at Metz Field in Fairview Park. With strong pitching from Jeremiah Miller and Brennan Goforth and some timely hitting from the locals, the Logansport nine defeated previously unbeaten Russiaville 10-6 to force a winner-take-all championship game.

"I'm really proud of these kids," said Logansport manager Chris Lucero. "They got down early in this game, but they never gave up. We've been down a few times in this tournament but the kids just keep plugging away. This was sure a team win for us as everybody contributed in some form."

Russiaville took a 12-11 win in the second game to win the district title. Both teams advance to the northern state tournament at Russiaville.

In the first game between Logansport and Russiaville, neither team was able to get anything going in the first inning and the Logan squad went quietly in the second before Russiaville plated three runs to take a 3-0 lead after two complete.

in the third inning the locals made it a game when Miller and Brady Bair scored to make it 3-2. When Russiaville came to bat in the bottom of the inning, it added one more run to its total to make it a 4-2 game.

Logansport threatened in the top of the fourth but runners were stranded and came up empty. In the bottom of the fourth, Russiaville plated two more runs to increase its lead to 6-2.

In the fifth inning, Logansport's offense came to life as the local squad scored eight runs behind base hits from Kaiden Lucero and JaQwan Duncan to take a 10-6 lead.

After the Logansport offense did its job, the defense showed it could play as well as Logan retired Russiaville in order in both the fifth and sixth inning to preserve the 10-6 win and force the deciding championship game.
