Fishing has been tough lately for myself. It seems that the weather has decided it needs to keep the rivers high and muddy much of the time this summer and every time it seems to get close to being in good fishing condition, it storms again.
I used to fish water in any condition, but it is always tougher when it is high and muddy. You can fish where creeks enter the rivers and if they are clear you can do very well where the two waters mix. We used to do this a lot as a kid, but it always cost us lots of hooks, weights, and bobbers. You could catch some nice fish, but I just do not enjoy fishing that way anymore.
I really like to be able to wade the river with the water clear or mostly clear. I like to feel the water, the temperature, and the speed of the current. It all makes me feel more connected to it all. It helps me read the water to determine what will work best on each particular trip because each trip is different.
I like to hunt the fish by watching the way the water pushes into eddies or slows into a deep pool. I like to see baitfish jump and run from attacking fish. It is a lot of fun watching bass take bugs off the top of the water. I watch every clue and then decide how I think I will catch fish. I am not always correct, but when everything comes together it is a lot of fun.
Area ponds have been a true savior lately as they have been in good shape. The trips that I have taken lately have been productive, not great though. A recent trip with friends to a pond had our kids and us fishing with live and artificial bait. I have to say that for the first time that I can remember, artificial bait did better than live bait. I guess it has been that kind if year. It was hot but the day was beautiful and the fishing was fun.
