The Logansport Cal Ripken league tournaments wrapped up Sunday with Happy Burger and Security Federal taking the titles.
It’s hard to come through the losers’ bracket when you’re trying to win a tournament, but Happy Burger pulled off the feat as it defeated Pepsi 10-0 and 5-4 to claim the 11- and 12-year-old division’s championship.
Pepsi could not get its offense on track in game one and never threatened to score. Meanwhile, the Happy Burger bats really came to life. It was a close game through four complete with Happy Burger leading just 2-0. Then in the bottom of the fifth, Happy Burger offense just exploded, scoring eight runs to end the game early on the 10-run mercy rule. That forced a winner-take-all game 2.
Game 2 proved to be an all-out battle. Pepsi scored three runs in the opening frame on one hit from Colby Heinz. When Happy Burger came to the plate, it was able to muster a run on hits from Kian Harris and Michael Meadows. After one complete it was 3-1 Pepsi.
Both teams were quiet in the second inning before Happy Burger scored two in the third to tie things up behind hits from Meadows, Parker Wilburn and Colton Barber.
The fourth inning saw Pepsi go back on top 4-3 behind hits from Heinz and Gavin Barron.
Happy Burger came up empty in its half of the fourth still down a run.
The fifth inning had Pepsi threatening but not scoring while Happy Burger was able to tie things up 4-4.
That brought it to sixth inning. Pepsi was set down in order and that left Happy Burger with one last at bat to claim the title and that’s what happened when Meadows was walked and moved to second on a hit by Wilburn. Next up was Trevor Vietti who scored Meadows on a base hit, giving Happy Burger the title by a 5-4 score.
