June is here and summer is officially about a week away. The weather has been nice enough and I am glad that last year’s heat has not returned, so far. I am sure some summer hot humid weather will find us soon enough.
Father’s Day is this weekend and it has a different meaning for all of us. I think of all the male figures that have been influential in my life so far. These include my Dad, Gramps, and other friends that I have met and shared time with in my life. I have spent a lot of that time with these male counterparts in the outdoors. We have shared time hunting, fishing, shooting, playing basketball, baseball, and football. These family men have shared their time and advice with me and it was a pleasure even if I didn’t follow the advice every time.
The backgrounds of these men differ as much as their personalities, from a cop, pressman, EMT, fireman, teacher, and factory workers, etc. The time shared was the gift they gave me and that was priceless. It helped make me who I am today.
I always enjoyed fishing with friends, but I have always had a favorite fishing buddy and that is Gramps. He taught me to be patient and have fun while we were enjoying the outdoors together. I hope that I do right by him when I am outdoors with my own daughter. I have to say that being a dad is not easy and that it is also the best thing that has ever happened to me. It is the scariest thing too. I just try to do the best that I can do every day and move on. I guess that is what I learned from everyone, do your best and be yourself.
