---- — Blanton wins double gold at jiu-jitsu world championship
LONG BEACH, Calif. — Logansport native Joel Blanton won double gold medals last weekend at the 2013 World Jiu-Jitsu No Gi Championship.
Blanton won gold medals in the purple belt senior 2 middle weight division and the purple belt senior 2 open class.
Blanton, 42, Lafayette, is a 1989 graduate of Logansport High School. He finished fourth at the IHSAA wrestling state finals in his weight class as a senior.
Purple belt is the intermediate adult ranking in Brazilian jiu-jitsu. The purple belt level practitioner has gained a large amount of knowledge, and purple belts are generally considered qualified to instruct lower ranked students. In other martial arts, students with a similar amount of experience are often ranked as a black (instructor) level belt.
Blanton competed for the Indiana Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy of Greenwood.
The World Championship was hosted by the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation.
Overway earns Big Ten academic honor
BLOOMINGTON — Indiana University redshirt sophomore Kyle Overway was named a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar.
Overway competes in cross country and track for the Hoosiers.
Indiana athletics boasted 55 honorees on the 2012-13 Big Ten Distinguished Scholar Awards list.
“These 55 student-athletes represent the highest ideals of intercollegiate athletics,” said Fred Glass, Indiana Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics. “They continue IU athletics’ longstanding tradition of success in the classroom. We are so proud to call them Hoosiers.”
Similar to the Academic All-Big Ten honor, Distinguished Scholar Award recipients must be letterwinners in at least their second academic year at their institution. However, the Distinguished Scholar Award encompasses only student-athletes with a minimum GPA of 3.7 or higher for the previous academic year, excluding summer school. The Academic All-Big Ten threshold is a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher for a student-athlete’s academic career.
