No. 6 Panthers sweep Comets in volleyball

FULTON — Class A, No. 6-ranked Pioneer wrapped up its undefeated season in Midwest Conference volleyball play with a 25-12, 25-14, 25-12 win at Caston Tuesday.

Pioneer is 22-8 overall, 7-0 in the MWC.

Despite double-digit wins in each set Tuesday, Pioneer coach Rod Nies has seen an improvement in Caston.

“Even though the scores don’t look it, I could see that their varsity has improved,” Nies said. “Caston’s coach Taylor McFarland needs to get the parents and players to get on board. They need a feeder system in there to get them going.”

Riley Morris led Pioneer with 19 assists and 15 service points. Megan Smith had 16 digs and eight service points. Sarah Dorris came up with 14 digs and eight kills. Shelby Roller had 11 assists and 10 service points. Kelsey Hill had 11 digs, and Kayte Miller added 10 service points.

Caston advances 5 runners to XC regional

Caston’s Seth Cousins, Darin Chew and Dalton Daily each qualified for the Culver Academies Regional by placing in the top 10 of non-advancing sectional teams Tuesday at the Culver Academies boys cross country sectional.

Cousins placed seventh (17:37). Chew was 32nd (19:04.4) and Daily came in 38th (19:46.5).

Warsaw’s Ellis Coon was the overall winner in 16:28.1. The Comets also had Andrew Smith, who placed 53rd (20:58), and Dawson Oliver was 60th (21:53).

As a team, Caston missed out on advancing by two places with a seventh place finish (189 points). Warsaw was the winner with 19, followed by Culver Academies (80), Rochester (90), Triton (110) and Plymouth (128).

In the girls meet, Caston’s Adrianna Dague placed seventh with a time of 20:31.5, and Jenna Showley was 33rd (23:29.5). Both Dague and Showley each qualified for the Culver Academy Regional by placing in the top 10 of the non-advancing sectional teams. Rochester’s Anna Bearse was the overall winner in 18:56.5.

Others running for the Comets were Hanna Cousins (51st, 25:44.6) and Krysta Schanlaub (29:30.8).

The Comets only had four runners, so they couldn’t compete in the team competition. Warsaw won the team with 30 points, followed by Culver Academies (60), Plymouth (71), Rochester (82) and Triton (170).

The Culver Academies Regional will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday.
