ROYAL CENTER — Pioneer's girls basketball team won its second straight game with a 36-11 win over visiting South Newton in the first game of a girls-boys doubleheader Friday night.
Mati DeWitt, a 6-foot junior, led the Panthers (2-3, 1-0 Midwest Conference) with nine points.
"We've come together and we are playing as a team," DeWitt said. "The girls are playing their hearts out. We are playing at a different level than we were early in the season."
Pioneer got out to an early lead and played with speed and intensity throughout in outscoring South Newton in all four quarters of play.
"I thought our defense was pretty good, especially the play of Sarah Dorris and Megan Smith," Pioneer coach David McWherter said. "Offensively we have improved on some things we have been working on, and it showed tonight. I thought Mati DeWitt played great in the post and everyone did a good job of getting her the ball."
Senior Gabby Dunlap added seven points in the win.
"It's nice to get back-to-back wins, and hopefully we will continue that trend," Dunlap said.
The Panthers travel to Carroll this afternoon.
