NEW CASTLE —
Logansport's girls basketball team jumped out to a big lead and held on for a 68-56 win Friday night at New Castle to secure a second straight undefeated season in North Central Conference play.
The Class 4A No. 4 Berries (20-1, 7-0 NCC) led 60-28 with two minutes left in the third quarter. But the Trojans (6-13, 1-6) made things interesting as they went on a 20-0 run over the next six minutes to pull within 62-48.
Back-to-back baskets by Madyson Price on assists by Whitney Jennings helped stem the tide for the Berries. But red-hot New Castle kept connecting and got to within 64-56 with 12.2 seconds left on Payton Anderson's seventh 3-pointer of the contest.
Jennings knocked down two free throws and then had a steal and assist to Nakeya Penny to finish out the scoring and give the Berries another double-digit win in NCC play, their 14th in a row. The Berries' 12-point margin of victory was the closest in the two-year stretch.
Jennings finished with 24 points, nine assists, seven steals and six rebounds to lead the Berries. Penny scored 16 points, and Price was also in double figures with 11. Kiley Victor had seven points, seven rebounds, three assists and three steals. Rachel Jennings returned from an illness that sidelined her earlier in the week and had five points. Krista Kyyroenen also had five points.
Anderson led the Trojans with 25 points. Holli Poe scored 10 and Alaynie Woollard had eight points and five boards.
The Berries led 26-4 after one quarter and 49-22 at halftime before the startling run by the Trojans.
