XC runners compete at New Prairie Semistate

---- — This cross country season was notable for having a number of young, talented runners in the area.

Several of those runners competed at the New Prairie Semistate on Saturday.

While no area runner advanced to the state finals, the youngsters got to see the level they need to reach next year to advance past the semistate round.

In the girls event, Caston freshman Adrianna Dague once again led the area contingent. She also reset her own school record in the process with a time of 19:52.1, finishing in 29th place overall at the semistate. She finished 15.3 seconds from the state cut time.

Winamac placed 17th as a team with 435 points. The Warriors were paced by freshman Claire Collins (35th, 20:12), followed by sophomore Kial Beach (79th, 21:08), sophomore Jaydyn Scott (104th, 21:51), senior Dagny Zupin (106th, 21:59), freshman Lilly Linch (111th, 22:13), sophomore Sara Bailey (113th, 22:23) and junior Melissa Bailey (130th, 25:25).Lewis Cass senior Gabi Carney placed 106th in 21:15.

West Lafayette won the team title with 32 points. LaPorte senior Elena Lancioni was the semistate champion with a time of 18:11.

Twin Lakes grabbed the sixth and final spot in the state finals as a team. The Indians were led by sophomore Madeline Lilly’s fifth-place finish in 18:35.

West Central junior Mickayla Wenzel advanced to the state finals with a 13th-place finish in 19:15.

In the boys event, Winamac sophomore Kyle Collins had the top finish among area runners, placing 42nd in 16:52.6. He finished 23.5 seconds from the state cut.

The Warriors placed 18th as a team with 410 points. Following Collins was sophomore Zen Zupin (42nd, 17:01), sophomore Derek Dotlich (104th, 18:06), freshman Braden Tankersley (105th, 18:07), freshman Joe Vontobel (125th, 18:46), senior Eric Newman (138th, 19:58) and junior Joshua Tankersley (139th, 21:54).

Logansport sophomore Jacob Graf placed 92nd in 17:36.

Carroll senior Cameron Conn finished 121st in 17:51.

Caston junior Seth Cousins placed 125th in 17:56.

West Lafayette also won the boys team title with 89 points. Former Berry Dominic Patacsil, a junior, was the fourth Red Devil to cross the finish line. He placed 26th overall in 16:38.Warsaw senior Ellis Coon was the semistate champion with a time of 15:45.

Volleyball

Clinton Prairie Sectional

Carroll lost in three games to Frontier, 25-14, 25-19, 25-15, at the Class A Clinton Prairie Sectional.

Bailey Worl had 10 kills and reached her personal goal of 400 kills for the season to lead the Cougars (12-19). Libby Eller had 19 digs and no missed serves. Lauren Worl had eight kills and Macy Willoughby had three kills.

Frontier defeated Tri-Central in four games to win the sectional title. The Falcons (21-10) travel to No. 6-ranked Lafayette Central Catholic for a regional match on Tuesday.
