Winamac volley nets senior night win
WINAMAC — Winamac’s volleyball team beat Caston 25-13, 25-22, 25-18 Monday night in the teams’ regular-season finale.
Ashley Eichelberger led the Warriors’ attack with 13 kills. Jaclyn Jacobs and Savanna Button combined for another 11 kills. Taylor Jones dished 19 assists and served seven aces. Bethany Brogdon, Winamac’s lone senior, had 13 digs and Eichelberger had 10 digs.
Winamac coach Cathy DeFries was happy for Brogdon to have a winning senior night.
“In the third game, we let her play the front row to give her a chance to hit. She did a great job defensively for us again and we will miss that effort every night that we see from her,” DeFries said. “The team truly loves Bethany B and they wanted to win this one for her.”
Winamac plays North Judson on Thursday in the Class 2A North Judson Sectional. Caston plays South Newton on Thursday in the Class A Pioneer Sectional.
Several NFL teams dealing with injuries
Reggie Wayne wasn’t the only big-name player to suffer a major injury Sunday.
St. Louis Rams QB Sam Bradford tore his left ACL, which coach Jeff Fisher said was already in a brace. The former No. 1 overall pick had 14 touchdown passes and just four interceptions in his fourth season.
The Chicago Bears also suffered big losses. Quarterback Jay Cutler will miss at least the next four weeks after tearing a muscle in his groin during a 45-41 loss to Washington. Pro Bowl linebacker Lance Briggs will be out for around six weeks after sustaining a small fracture in his left shoulder.
Veteran Josh McNown will replace Cutler. Pro Bowl cornerback Charles Tillman also left the game with a knee injury for the Bears.
Houston Texans Pro Bowl linebacker Brian Cushing is out for the season with a left knee injury that will require surgery. Cushing, who tore his left ACL last season, was injured in the third quarter of a loss at Kansas City during a low block by running back Jamaal Charles.
