DePaul’s Penny earns WBCA nomination

DePaul senior forward Jasmine Penny on Tuesday earned an All-Region nomination from the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association.

The Logansport High School product is one of 52 nominees. A WBCA selection committee will choose 10 for the Division I Coaches’ All-America Team, which will be announced on April 5 during the Women’s Final Four.

Penny has helped DePaul (29-6) reach the Sweet 16. The Blue Demons have won nine games in a row and 18 of their last 19. Their 29 wins tie the program’s single-season record.

Penny is averaging a team-high 15.5 points per game. She had a six-game scoring spree from Dec. 29 to Jan. 14 in which put up at least 21 points. She had a season-high 29 at Bradley. The 6-foot-1 forward is shooting 58 percent from the field, ranking among the national leaders. Penny was a first-team all-Big East pick, and the MVP of the Big East tournament.

DePaul plays in a regional semifinal on Saturday at Lincoln, Neb.

No. 1 UConn women win their 42nd straight

STORRS, Conn. (AP) — Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis had the third triple-double in UConn history as the Huskies moved into their 21st straight NCAA regional semifinal with a 91-52 rout of Saint Joseph’s on Tuesday night.

Mosqueda-Lewis had 20 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists, to lead five players in double figures for the top-ranked Huskies (36-0), who won their 42nd straight game.

UConn will face 12th-seeded BYU in the Lincoln, Nebraska on Saturday. The Cougars upset Nebraska in the second round, sparing the Huskies a date with the Cornhuskers on their home court.
