Boone Grove clips Winamac in sectional semifinal

Warriors finish season with 16-6 record.

Winamac’s girls basketball team was defeated by Boone Grove for the second time this season.

This time the season was on the line.

The Warriors had a big fourth-quarter comeback attempt fall just short in a 46-43 loss to the Wolves Friday night in a semifinal game of the Class 2A Hebron Sectional. The Warriors conclude their season with a 16-6 record.

“I was extremely proud of the team for battling their way back into the game as we had discussed before the game, leaving it on the floor and having no regrets,” Winamac coach Jeff Wagner said. “I believe the girls did that.”

The Warriors entered the fourth quarter trailing 41-28, but they went on a 14-2 run and got to within 43-42 with 20 seconds left. Sarah Steinhilber then hit two free throws at 18.2 to provide the Wolves (16-6) some breathing room. A Jessica Schramm foul shot with 1.7 to go accounted for the final.

“We waited too long to start working our way back in it,” Wagner said.

Schramm and Bethany Brogdon hit back-to-back 3s to get the rally started, according to the Winamac coach.

“We became more energized and clawed our way back,” he said.

But the 13-point deficit after three quarters was too much to overcome. Winamac trailed 9-8 after one quarter and 27-21 at the half.

“Turnovers and rebounds were the story of the game as we turned it over too much and costly ones at the point where they were able to get lay-ins for points,” Wagner said.

Winamac committed 16 turnovers for the game and was outrebounded 28-17.

Schramm led the Warriors with 16 points and seven rebounds. She was 5 of 10 from 3-point range. Stephanie Shorter had 11 points and six boards. Brogdon had eight points and five assists. Whitney Hook added six points on a pair of 3-point baskets.

“I want to thank our seniors for a great four years, and we wish them all the success in the future,” Wagner said. “The team would also like to thank the Lady Warrior fans for the great support all year.”

Paige Aguilera nearly had a triple-double for Boone Grove and finished with 16 points, 10 rebounds, 10 steals and seven assists. Nicole Malouhos added 12 points and seven rebounds.

Boone Grove faces Rochester in tonight’s final.
