Warriors jump all over Redskins in rout

West Central runs past Culver.

Winamac senior fullback Tyler Katschke took the ball to the house 70 yards on the Warriors’ first play of the season Friday night at Knox.

It was all downhill sledding from there for the Class A No. 6 Warriors.

They scored 56 straight points to start the game in a 56-14 drubbing on the road in the season opener.

Katschke finished with 169 yards rushing and three touchdowns to lead the way. Quarterback Parker Fox had 79 yards rushing and a TD and added 113 yards passing and an 11-yard TD pass to Sean Lynch.

Levi Schultz had a 22-yard interception return for a score. Keegan Kasten and Risner each added a TD run.

All-state kicker Zach Markley was 8 for 8 in extra points and his eight PAT’s in a game broke the school record set in 1980 by Jose Papiz’, a foreign exchange student from Brazil.

Winamac coach Tim Roth said he was surprised by the ease at which the win came.

“We thought we’d have our hands full up there,” he said. “They had some preseason hype after their great performance in their scrimmage. We felt like we could win but we didn’t think it’d be as easy at it was.

“We had a great start. Our first play from scrimmage was a 70-yard run. We scored three times in the first quarter and were able to pin our ears back and went after it.”

W. Central 18, Culver 6

Hunter Holliday had 122 yards rushing and Parker Fritz added 113 yards and a score in the Trojans’ win at Culver.

The game was tied 6-all at halftime before Felciana Villarreal scored from 5 yards out in the third quarter and Fritz added a 15-yard TD run in the fourth quarter. Austin Davis added a 5-yard TD run in the first quarter for West Central.

Preston Hansel had a 93-yard TD run in the first quarter for the Cavaliers and finished with 162 yards on 12 carries to lead them. But they were outgained 366-188 in total yardage for the game.
