Penny nets milestonein DePaul’s victory
PEORIA, Ill. — Logansport’s Jasmine Penny led the way as DePaul beat Bradley 91-67 in a women’s basketball game Sunday. Penny tied her career high with 29 points on the strength of 13-of-14 shooting from the field. She also had five rebounds, three steals and two assists.
Penny punctuated her big game with a milestone. The 6-foot-1 senior forward entered the game needed just three points to become the 29th member of the DePaul women’s 1,000-point club. She accomplished it on her third shot of the game, when Jessica January found her under the basket.
The Blue Demons have won five straight games, pushing their record tom 9-3. They begin Big East play on Wednesday against Xavier.
No. 2 Irish womenbeat Oregon State
CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) — Kayla McBride scored 20 points, Natalie Achonwa added 16 points and eight rebounds, and No. 2 Notre Dame remained perfect with a 70-58 victory over Oregon State in a women’s basketball game on Sunday.
Sophomore Jewell Loyd, last year’s national freshman of the year, had 10 points for the Irish (11-0) — 8.5 below her team-leading average coming in.
Jamie Weisner scored 18 points to lead the Beavers (8-4), and Ruth Hamblin added 12 points, eight rebounds and a school record-tying nine blocks.
Notre Dame used an 11-0 run bridging halftime to take a 37-33 lead, and didn’t trail again.
Atkins-led Irish mentop Canisius in OT
SOUTH BEND (AP) — Playing without its leading scorer, Notre Dame’s men’s basketball team got a career day from Eric Atkins, who scored a career-best 30 points to lead the Irish to an 87-81 overtime win Sunday over Canisius.
It has been a rough week for the Irish (9-4), who lost an 8-point lead against No. 3 Ohio State, then senior Jerian Grant to an academic violation, and sophomore reserve Cameron Biedscheid to transfer.
