Logansport’s Jennings earns weekly IBCA honor
For the second time this season Logansport senior Whitney Jennings has been named an IBCA/Subway Player of the Week.
The 5-5 Jennings averaged 42.0 points over two games to earn the girls’ District 1 honor. The Iowa recruit opened with 39 points, six rebounds, two assists and eight steals as Logansport posted a 59-45 victory over Harrison (West Lafayette). Jennings followed with 45 points, 11 rebounds, five assists and five steals in an 84-72 triumph over Anderson. In the two games for the 8-0 Berries, she made 29-of-55 shots, including 2-of-6 3-pointers, plus 24-of-32 free throws. Jennings previously was cited the week of Nov. 18-23.
The Class 4A No. 6 Berries compete in the Twin Lakes Holiday Tournament this weekend. They face Evansville Memorial (4-3) at 4:45 p.m. Friday. Class 3A No. 6 Western (8-1) and Indianapolis Cathedral (3-5) are in the Berries’ bracket. The winners and losers of Friday’s contest will square off at 11 a.m. Saturday in separate gyms in Monticello.
The other side of the bracket includes Class 3A No. 5 Western Boone (10-0) vs. Taylor (2-8) and Carroll (7-2) vs. Twin Lakes (4-5). The placement games will be held on Saturday highlighted by the championship game at 8 p.m.
Comets, Panthers wrestlers compete at invitational
FULTON — Caston and Pioneer competed at the Caston 10-team wrestling invitational on Saturday.
North White won the event with a 9-0 record and Viking Ryan Ball was named the MVP.
West Central was runner-up at 8-1, followed by Calumet (7-2), Rossville (6-3), Fountain Central (5-4), North Judson (4-5), Clinton Prairie (3-6), Northwestern (2-7), Caston (1-8) and Pioneer (0-9).
Caston’s Braden Moss was the champion of the 138-pound weight class.
Holy Family rallies to edge Le Moyne
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — Derrick Stewart made a free throw with 1:31 left to break a tie as Holy Family University rallied to defeat the Le Moyne College men’s basketball team, 67-65, on Sunday afternoon in non-conference action at the Campus Center.
Senior guard Nate Champion led the Dolphins with a game-high eight rebounds, while posting eight points (his first game under 13 this season) and five assists.
Tylon Smith made a free throw with 1.4 seconds left to give Southern Connecticut State University a 70-69 win over Le Moyne in Northeast-10 Conference action on Thursday night at Ted Grant Court. Champion led the Dolphins in the loss with 23 points, 14 of which came in the second half, eight rebounds and five assists. It was Le Moyne’s first home loss of the season.
Le Moyne (5-5, 3-2 NE-10, 5-4 East Region), which has dropped back-to-back games for the first time this year, opens the 2014 portion of its schedule and wraps up its non-conference slate on Thursday, Jan. 2 at Queens College at 7 p.m.
IUK men’s hoops team drops decision to CCU
Indiana Kokomo University’s men’s basketball team was defeated by visiting Cincinnati Christian University 97-70 on Monday.
IUK (2-11, 1-5 KIAC) was led by Nick Tweeter’s 25 points. Jordan King had 13 points and Dylan Mosack added 12 points and a team-high six rebounds.
Cincinnati Christian (9-3, 2-0) had five players in double figures, led by Kenny Gaynor’s 21 points on 8 of 8 shooting.
