West Central tops Caston for 4th straight sectional title

FRANCESVILLE — The third time wasn’t a charm for Caston in losing to West Central 36-21 in the Class A West Central Sectional championship game here Saturday.

West Central has won four consecutive sectional titles, while the Comets have been the bridesmaid in three of them.

As for the game, Caston played catch-up throughout the first half. The Comets fell behind 5-0 only to come back and tie it at 5-5 on a 3-pointer by Marli Leazenby. West Central then took a four point lead (9-5), and Caston came back again, but this time took the lead at 11-9 on a free throw by Sarah Holt. It was the only time that Caston led in the game. West Central would then go on a 9-0 run to take a commanding 18-11 with 3:02 left in the first half. The Comets cut the Trojans lead to five (20-15) on a jumper by Anna Brown.

“West Central played a super game [Saturday],” Caston coach Carl Davis said. “They did a great job of pressuring us, causing us to turn the ball over. I thought in the first half we lost Kruger a couple of times on a sprint, and that got them the lead in the first half. I was very happy at halftime with the way we competed in the first half.”

The second half was the complete opposite than the first for the Comets.

West Central either held the ball or passed it among its players to look for the open man, which was underneath the basket.

“In the third quarter we had some turnovers early and it kind of set the tone for us,” Davis added. “Unfortunately they capitalized on them in good possessions.”

Caston didn’t take a shot in the third quarter, not scoring any points.

West Central begged, borrowed and stole, but most of all stalled. The Trojans kept passing the ball around until the open man broke for the basket. The Trojans scored six points in the quarter to take a 26-15 lead at the break. Caston didn’t take a shot, but the Comets did commit five turnovers.
