Strong finish for Logansport

Berries shut out New Castle in boys soccer regular season finale

FROM STAFF REPORTS

Logansport boys soccer coach Mike Turner has been frustrated with his squad’s penchant for controlling the ball but not finishing with goals this season.

Saturday did not make him much happier in that department as the Berries converted just five of their 30 shots on goal in their 5-0 win against New Castle, but he did see encouraging signs as the team heads into the postseason.

“The team was communicating. Everyone was talking well and marking well,” he said. “It was our first complete game of the season. Our defense was communicating and our mids were communicating. It was a good game to watch.”

Logan goalkeeper Diego Soriano pitched the shutout and had five saves. Turner also credited the defense of Jared Jennings.

Juan Carols Ortega, Garrett Baldini, Justin Schlinglof, Giovanny Cardenas and Jairo Rodriguez had a goal apiece for the Berries (6-7-3, 3-4 North Central Conference). Schlinglof had an assist on Baldini’s goal and Baldini had an assist on Schlinglof’s goal.

“It was nice to finish off the season with a conference win,” Turner said. “It’s a nice confidence boost going into sectionals. We possessed the ball well and had better finishing.

“We played a a good team. They’re a little bit down from previous years, but they played a good game.”

Logan faces Twin Lakes in Logansport Sectional play at 5 p.m. on Thursday.

Carroll 3, Western Boone 2

The Cougars (13-3) finished their best regular season with a win on the road.

Chase Meade scored a pair of goals to lead the Cougars. Justin Moffitt added a goal from about 35 yards out on an assist by Michael Myer.

Carroll faces Northwestern at the Logansport Sectional at 7 p.m. on Thursday night.

Logansport 7, New Castle 1 (JV)

The Berries won to finish the season with an 8-4-2 mark.

Andrew Russell and Christian Montero each had two goals. Ruben Roque, Ulises Contreras and Fernando Bravo scored a goal apiece.

Volleyball

Argos Tourney

Winamac was defeated by Elkhart Christian in two games (25-22, 25-13) before defeating Argos in two games (25-19, 25-7).

The Warriors (20-8) set a school record for wins in a season with the win over Argos.

Erika Redweik had 19 kills, nine blocks and nine digs on the day, and Stephanie Boos pounded out nine aces.

Sarah Redweik dished out 28 assists, and Rachael Franko contributed 17 digs, six kills and three aces. Sarah Doty had nine digs and four aces, and Allie DeFries added six kills, five blocks and seven digs. Kaitlin O’Donnell added eight digs.

“We played probably the best I have seen us play as a team the first game with Elkhart,” Winamac coach Cathy DeFries said. “Our digs indicated that our defense was ready with 37 digs. However, that translates into a lot of defensive effort, which hurt us. You can’t play more defense than offense. Somehow you need to get the offensive end working just as much, if not more. But Elkhart is a very good team with all-around talent in every position.”

In the Argos match, Winamac set a school record with 18 aces in a match, and Boos set a school record with nine aces.

“[Boos] had eight aces in a JV match last week which made us decide to move her up to a serving position on varsity,” DeFries said. “She has accepted and filled this role very well.”

The Warriors travel to Tri-County on Tuesday.
