PREP ROUNDUP: Panthers spike Berries
LHS suffers 1st defeat in volleyball; Warriors beat Culver to move to 9-3 on the season
From Staff Reports
The Pioneer volleyball team was able to overcome a big size advantage for Logansport in a 18-25, 27-25, 25-19, 25-22 win at the Berry Bowl Tuesday night.
The win knocked the Berries (3-1) from the ranks of undefeated.
“Pioneer’s defense played wonderful. They came ready to play,” Logan coach Jamee Jones said. “We knew if you give them an inch, they’d take a mile. We gave them the momentum and they ran with it.
“We’ve got to get back to the drawing board.”
For Logan, Kelsey Victor had 15 kills, Kian Rombold had nine and Jasmine Penny added seven. Rombold added three aces, and Erin Angle distributed 17 assists.
Jones wasn’t pleased with her squad’s defense in the contest.
“We’re not covering our blocking girls,” she said. “We had girls out of place and they hit it right in the middle where we weren’t.”
Another key factor was missed serves by the Berries.
“We gave up a lot of points on serving mistakes. We’ve got girls that are young and inexperienced at the varsity level. They need to understand you can’t give up all those free points,” Jones said. “We’ve got great servers. They’re just trying to get aces, and they’ve got to get it on their minds they don’t need to try to get an ace every time. We’ve got great hitters and we need to play out the point sometimes.”
“It was frustrating,” the Logan coach added. “We’re still optimistic we can get this hammered out. We’ve got incredible athletes this year.”
The Berries host the Logan Classic on Saturday. The Panthers return to action on Thursday when they host Northwestern.
Winamac 3, Culver 0
The Lady Warriors improved to 9-3 with a 25-13, 25-22, 25-21 win.
Erika Redweik had a game-high 22 kills while her younger sister Sarah dished out 28 assists. Rachael Franko had eight digs.
“It’s always nice to have the ‘W,” but it wasn’t our prettiest win so far,” Winamac coach Cathy DeFries said. “We lacked intensity, and I would have liked to have seen us be a little more aggressive throughout the game instead of just in spurts. We still played very well. Our blocking game has to improve to help our defense out. We will be working out some kinks the rest of this week to get ready for the Kankakee Valley Tournament on Saturday.
“Erika Redweik looked very strong with a great attack game. She and her sister Sarah read each other very well and Sarah has such a great court sense and good hands to put it right where she needs the set to be.”
Delphi 3, Frontier 1
The Lady Oracles moved to 2-5 with the 24-26, 26-24, 25-22, 25-13 victory.

Olivia George had seven digs and Leslie Kayser added five. Brittney Atwood contributed seven aces and Haley Richardson had six.
“The first game they had us down nine and we came back to tie it at 24-24,” Oracles coach Suzanne Hughes said. “Even though we lost that game, I was proud to see us play from behind and come that close. In the second game we were able to hold them off after they made a nice comeback. That was the first time I’ve seen this team do those things. And in the fourth game we just dominated. Everyone finally came together and just played very well together.”
Delphi travels to Rossville on Thursday.
