PREP ROUNDUP: Logan netters topple Cougars
Kings dominant in win at Delphi
FROM STAFF REPORTS
Wednesday night was sectional preview night for boys tennis in Loganland.
Logansport, which is again hosting the sectional this year, hosted possible sectional opponent Carroll while two other teams in the Logansport Sectional field, Delphi and Lewis Cass, faced off. The only squad from the sectional not in action was Twin Lakes.
For the Berries and the Kings it was a good night, as they each recorded victories. For the Cougars and Oracles, it’s back to the drawing board and practice courts. Luckily for them, the season wasn’t on the line as it will be in five weeks when tennis sectional play around the state opens up on Oct. 2.
On Wednesday two-time defending sectional champion Logansport defeated the Cougars 4-1 to improve to 3-1 on the season. At No. 1 singles Evan Clem defeated Isiah Stevens in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0. At No. 2 singles Jordan McGuire topped Aaron Spesard, also in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. At No. 3 singles the Cougars (0-3) recorded their lone point on the night where Kyle Seward knocked off Kevin Leung 2-6, 6-4, 6-2.
At No. 2 doubles Logan’s Robbie Stewart and Andrew Rowe topped Kyle Geheb and Hunter Upton 6-2, 6-1. And at No. 2 doubles it was Jacob McCord and Rick Brink defeating Blake Barnard and Dallas Butcher 6-1, 6-0.
“Logansport is one of the better teams we’re going to play this year,” Carroll coach Jerry Reinke said. “I thought we played pretty good. We had a tough match [Tuesday] night against Benton Central, so I think that took a lot out of us. But all in all we played pretty good and I was especially happy with my No. 3 singles player Kyle Seward.”
Logan coach Matt Tuggle was happy with the way his squad took care of business.
“We’ve got a pretty good bit of experience back this year from our team last year, and a lot of that’s at the top of our lineup, and those guys played really well today and did what they needed to do,” he said.
Tuggle added the lone Berry loss on the night was a learning experience for No. 3 singles player Leung.
“He’s a good player,” Tuggle said. “I’ve got a lot of confidence in him. He’s just going to keep getting better every day. He’ll bounce back from this. This is the first match he’s ever played singles for varsity.”
If the two squads do meet in sectional play later this season, do the Cougars have a chance?
“I still think we’d have to play a darn good match to compete with them,” Reinke said, “but we’re not going to lose any players next year. We don’t have any seniors on the team, so I don’t want to say we’re writing off this year but we’re looking forward to next year a lot. We’re going to field a pretty decent team this year but we think we’ll be even better next year.”
Carroll next hosts Attica on Tuesday. The Berries return to action on Saturday when they host the Logansport Invite. Play begins at 9 a.m. with Logan facing Wabash and Cass facing Seeger. Marion goes up against North Judson and Maconaquah faces Rensselaer at 10:30 a.m. Play is scheduled throughout the day, with first- and third-place matches slated for 4 p.m.

Sarah Redweik distributed 34 assists and added 14 digs. Sarah Doty had 21 digs and Kaitlin O’Donnell added 16.
“We looked great at times and other times real flat,” Winamac coach Cathy DeFries said. “We struggled early on, then improved late. Our passing game was better which made our offense a little more effective. Too many free balls kept them close to us throughout the match. We pulled out some really close games and we will take the win.”
Winamac jumped out to a 12-0 lead before losing the fourth game.
“That lead didn’t last long as we got into a slump with our serve receive and offensive attack,” DeFries said. “Frontier’s leading attacker proved very effective throughout, but we were able to capitalize when she was in the back row.”
This past weekend the Warriors won the Oregon-Davis Early Bird Tournament for the first time in school history. Erika Redweik, Allie DeFries, Doty and Sarah Redweik all made the all-tournament team.

The Warriors (0-2-1) tied the game when Joel Frain scored after a long sideline pass from John Sass midway through the second half. Maconaquah dented the scoreboard first with a goal in the first three minutes of the contest.
“We really had the better play tonight,” Winamac coach Mark Eber said, “but had the rotten luck of [not] finishing the ball. A lot of breakaway and short-range shots just missed or were blocked. We continue to get better each and every time out and just need to avoid making those one or two costly mistakes that are plaguing us right now. The three games at Plymouth will be a good barometer to see if we’re really progressing like we hope we are.”
Winamac goalie Jake McKinley had eight saves in the contest.
The Warriors compete in the Plymouth Tournament on Saturday.
