Penny, Jennings win awards at camp

Two girls basketball players from Logansport participated in the Duke University Elite Camp this summer.

Jasmine Penny, a junior at Logansport High School, and Whitney Jennings, a seventh grader at Lincoln Middle School, both won awards at the camp. Penny won the one-on-one competition and Jennings was runner-up in the three-point competition.

Out of the 40 participants at the camp, the Logan duo was selected to a 12-person team that scrimmaged the Duke women’s basketball team.

The Duke Elite Camp is an invitation-only camp. The goal of the camp is to prepare the campers for the reality of their dreams of competing on the collegiate level. The campers are given insights on the college life from players and coaches.

Jennings was the only middle school student who was invited to the camp.

Albright, Jennings win scholarships

Two recently graduated Logansport girls basketball players were recipients of Marion Crawley Scholarships by the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association recently.

Kira Albright and Shannon Jennings won the scholarships, each in the amount of $500, which recognize exemplary citizenship and scholarship.

Wamsley qualifies for long drive worlds

Mark Wamsley, Logansport, recently won a regional long drive competition held in Mansfield, Ohio to qualify for the REMax World Long Drive Championship. The RWLDC will be held this fall in Mesquite, Nev.

At the regional, Wamsley, 50, won the senior division against a field of 20 competitors. The format was double-elimination. Each round competitors hit a set of six drives with only the longest drive counting. To count the drive must finish in the grid.

Wamsley’s hit drives of 371, 384, 373 and 379 yards before recording a winning drive of 393 yards in the final round. He said there was a wind helping and a hard grid.

Wamsley competed in the RWLDC in 2003, 2004 and 2005 with his best finish being 12th in 2004.

The 2008 RWLDC will have 272 competitors from four age divisions for men, and a women’s division. The total purse will be $600,000. A highlight package of the championship will be taped and aired on ESPN during Christmas.

Biscella hits hole-in-one

Shane Biscella hit a hole-in-one on hole No. 6 at Logan’s Run Family Golf Center at 7 p.m. on Aug. 8.

The ace, which hit the green and rolled in, was witnessed by Steve Whaley.

Special Olympics Golf Outing set

The annual Special Olympics Cass County Golf Outing will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 10 at Dykeman Park Golf Course.

A lunch will be served from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. with a shotgun start following at 1 p.m.

CCS swim team is having stroke clinic

The Cass County Seals swim team is holding an open registration for a stroke clinic beginning Monday, Aug. 25.

The purpose of this clinic is to improve and refine the four basic swim strokes (freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly) as well as to begin conditioning for the upcoming winter season.

There is a $40 participation fee for this eight-day clinic. Each swimmer will receive a T-shirt.

The dates of the clinic are Aug. 25-28 and Sept. 2-5. Novice or beginning swimmers will swim from 6-7 p.m. and age group or experienced swimmers will swim from 7-8:15 p.m. All swim practices are held at the Logansport High School pool.

Swimmers must be at least 6 years of age and able to swim a minimum of 25 yards without assistance.
