Logan 10s win district tourney

Logan 12s to face rematch with Russiaville tonight.

From Staff Reports

The Logansport 10-year-old All-Star baseball A team won its Cal Ripken League District Tournament with a 4-1 win over Taylor Sunday at Metz Field.

Kaleb Overway and Clint Matheis combined on the win on the mound, each pitching three inning stints and allowing a total of three hits in the contest.

For Logan at the plate, A.J. Smith, Alex Brink and Jacob Steinman all hit doubles. Ryan Bixler and Mason Hill both singled in the contest.

12-year-old All-Stars

The Logansport 12-year-old All-Star A team survived in district tournament play with a pair of lopsided wins at Crain Field.

Logan defeated Rensselaer 14-2 in four innings in its first game of the day and then turned around and beat Tri-County 11-1 in five.

In the opener, Kyle Jordan and Sheldon Corcoran combined for the win on the mound. Jordan allowed one hit in two innings and Corcoran allowed three hits in two innings.

At the plate, Corcoran went 3-for-3 with a home run and a double. Nito Luna hit a pair of home runs.

Austin Gaby and Travis Palmer both went 2-for-2, with both of Palmer’s hits being doubles. Dustin Clements and Chris Jones added base hits.

In the second game, Palmer allowed three hits in three innings and Luna allowed one hit in two innings of relief.

At the plate, Gaby hit a pair of home runs and Palmer went 2-for-2 with a home run.

Clements went 3-for-3 with a double and Cooper Kinnaman went 2-for-2 with two doubles.

Jordan tripled and Andrew Wamsley doubled. Bradley Nies and Jacob Shelton added singles.

“I cannot be happier with how our team played today,” Logan coach Dan Frye said. “We’re a very good team defensively and we swung the bats very aggressively. Even on our outs the ball was hit very well. We hit the ball hard up and down the lineup.”

The Logan squad, with players who won a state championship as 11 year olds a year ago and finished runner-up in the Ohio Valley Region, faces a Russiaville team in an elimination game at 6 p.m. tonight at Crain Field. Russiaville defeated Logansport 12-5 on Saturday in Logan’s district opener. Russiaville was defeated by Taylor 3-2 Sunday as Taylor recorded the win despite getting just two base hits in the contest.

Logan will likely face Russiaville ace Cameron Herr, who according to Frye will have five innings of eligibility on the mound for tonight’s game. Frye added Herr throws over 70 miles per hour.

“If we’re gonna make it, we have to beat the best,” he said. “That’s how I like to have it. If we’re gonna do anything past here, we’re gonna have to beat the best.”

The winner of the contest advances to the state tournament in St. John and advances to face Taylor, who already has a spot in the state tourney secured, in the district championship game. The loser goes home.

“It doesn’t get a whole lot more difficult than what it is right now even if we were at the state tournament,” Frye said. “To advance out of our district, you have to play quality baseball.”

“I like our team,” the Logan coach added. “We have a lot of guys who know the game of baseball.”
