Zeck adds to Kings’ memorable campaign

Catcher will play in All-Star Series next weekend in Evansville.

Lewis Cass’ baseball team had a school record breaking season in 2009.

And the Kings have two selected to represent them at the IHSBCA All-Star Series next weekend in Evansville.

Coach Greg Marschand and senior catcher Colton Zeck were chosen to represent Cass, although Marschand, who was selected as the North’s coach, declined the offer.

“I just feel like I have a lot of responsibilities here at Cass, and that’s the No. 1 thing I need to take care of,” said Marschand, who doubles as the school’s athletic director. “It’s a tremendous honor and I appreciate it, but our season ran long and I have a lot of things to catch up on. I owe my time to Cass to make sure that our fall sports get going as the AD.”

Zeck hit .348 with five home runs, 28 RBIs and 33 runs scored for the state finalist Kings. He is the 10th Cass baseball player who will play in the All-Star series.

“That’s a tremendous honor for Colton,” Marschand said. “Colton was the spark plug for our team and got things going and kept things going for us. We’ve had several players who have been selected for the All-Star series and have been blessed with a large number of guys going to the games. A couple years back Garrett Segraves was the MVP of the games.”

The series includes a doubleheader on Friday at the University of Evansville and a wooden-bat game on Saturday at Evansville Bosse’s baseball field.

Zeck said he’s honored by the selection.

“It’s awesome. It was definitely a personal goal I had set at the beginning of the year. It’s a good thing to reach it,” he said.

Zeck enjoyed his senior season in which the Kings made their first-ever run to the state finals. Cass was defeated by Heritage Christian 11-3 in the Class 2A championship game.

“It was awesome making it to Victory Field,” he said. “It’s an awesome place to play. We didn’t play the greatest, but we reached our goal of making the state finals.

“The camaraderie we had on our team was awesome. We had a great season, and I wouldn’t trade it for any other one.”

Zeck will play both baseball and football at Hanover College, where he plans to study forensic pathology. Zeck, who was named the Loganland Player of the Year in football, said football is his favorite sport and the sport he thinks he excels in the most. Zeck will join former Cass teammates Rory Mannering, Clayton Mannering and Ryne Stover on the playing fields at Hanover.
